The United Nations Association of Singapore was established as a non-governmental organization in 1969. As a voluntary organization, its membership is open to all who support the United Nations and its charter obligations.
3 October – Two United Nations agencies today welcomed a call issued by Nepal’s Supreme Court for food to be supplied to one dozen districts in the Asian nation’s mid- and far-western regions. 2 October – A United Nations food convoy today crossed into the Vanni region of northern Sri Lanka, the scene of recent clashes between Government forces and rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), to offer a lifeline to an estimated 200,000 civilians who have been displaced by the fighting. 1 October – United Nations officials in Sri Lanka today deplored the placing of explosives by an unknown group on a Government truck that was due to join a UN food convoy in the north of the country, the scene of intense recent fighting between Government forces and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). 1 October – The United Nations, the Myanmar Government and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which comprises the Tripartite Core Group, have stressed the need for continued assistance to the some 2.4 million people affected by Cyclone Nargis, noting that nearly half of the $482 million appeal launched in July remains unfunded. 1 October – The United Nations and the Government of Myanmar are pushing for safe infant feeding practices, as efforts continue to respond to the crisis of melamine-contaminated milk products in China which has driven over 54,000 children to seek medical treatment. 29 September – Ensuring global energy security requires stepped-up investment, a top official from Turkmenistan, one of the world’s major oil and natural gas producers, told the final day of the General Assembly’s high-level annual debate. 29 September – Myanmar could become the rice bowl of its region and provide energy to other countries if “immoral” sanctions against it were lifted, the country’s Foreign Minister told the General Assembly today.

Security situation in Afghanistan ‘markedly’ worse, reports Secretary-General

29 September 2008 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for a change of pace and direction in Afghanistan, where the worsening security situation is hampering the efforts of the Government, the United Nations and international partners to rebuild the strife-torn nation.

UN Asia-Pacific forum focuses on technology for people with disabilities

29 September 2008 – The United Nations today kicked off an initiative to improve access to information and communication technology (ICT) for persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific, including using a computer keyboard or being able to see information on the Internet – things most people take for granted.

Fijian leader tells UN that planned parliamentary elections must be delayed

27 September 2008 – Fiji will not be able to hold democratic parliamentary elections by March next year, as previously scheduled, because it first needs to reform its electoral system, the country’s Prime Minister has told the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate.

DPR Korea committed to peaceful resolution of nuclear issue, UN told

27 September 2008 – A senior official from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) told the General Assembly today that the country hopes to resolve issues regarding its nuclear programme peacefully, but warned that it will take action in response to recent moves by the United States.

Uzbekistan, at UN, calls for ‘radical’ new approach to problems in Afghanistan

27 September 2008 – A radical overhaul of policies focusing more on economic and social assistance rather than military strength is needed if Afghanistan is to ever achieve peace and stability, Uzbek Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov told the General Assembly today.

India: Ban deplores recent string of bomb attacks against civilians

27 September 2008 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today voiced his deep concern over recent bombings in Indian cities that target civilian areas, after a blast today at a market in the capital, Delhi, killed a 13-year-old boy and injured many others.

Myanmar: Ban reviews latest developments with ‘Group of Friends’

27 September 2008 – Members of a group of nations helping Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his efforts to spur change in Myanmar today encouraged the Government of the Asian country to work more closely with the UN to deal with issues of concern, including the release of the long-detained political prisoner Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

World on brink of new nuclear arms race, top Kazakh official warns UN

27 September 2008 – With the world on the precipice of a new rush to boost arms supplies, reaching consensus on nuclear disarmament is more critical than ever, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister told the General Assembly today.

27 September 2008 – The current global economic system is to fault for deforestation, Papua New Guinea’s Deputy Prime Minister told the General Assembly’s high-level debate today, stressing the need to protect the South Pacific nation’s rainforests from degredation.

Climate change threatens international peace, Pacific Island States tell UN debate

26 September 2008 – Pacific Island States spoke out at the General Assembly today on the issue of climate change, promising to table a draft resolution during the climate session that will call on the United Nations to investigate the threat posed by global warming to international peace and security.

Up to 170,000 flood victims in western Nepal to receive UN emergency aid

 
26 September 2008 – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said today it is mobilizing emergency assistance for up to 170,000 people in western Nepal who have been displaced by the severe flooding that claimed more than 30 lives earlier this month.

Nuclear sources could deliver energy, mitigate climate change, India tells UN

26 September 2008 – India’s rapid economic growth is driving it to pursue all avenues to locate sources of clean energy, the South Asian nation’s Prime Minister told delegates at the annual high-level segment of the General Assembly today.

Bhutan, at UN, hits out at impact of consumerism on scarce natural resources

26 September 2008 – Bhutan’s Prime Minister warned today at the General Assembly that consumerism is draining the world of key natural resources and helping spark or exacerbate recent crises over fuel prices, water reserves and the financial markets. 23 September – The independent United Nations expert on the situation of human rights in Myanmar has welcomed the reported release of seven political prisoners today, calling it a positive sign of cooperation from the Government of the South-East Asian nation. 23 September – Over 5,000 refugees from Bhutan have left their camps in Nepal to resettle in third countries this year, in one of the United Nations refugee agency’s largest and most promising resettlement programmes. 23 September – The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)has joined forces with China, which was struck by a devastating earthquake in May that left nearly 100,000 dead or missing, to reduce the damage wrought by future disasters.
